Family story is that when Richard died, Martha went crazy and would not let them bury the baby. Her Husband was in the Confederate Army and she began walking to his camp to show him the baby.

About Princeton Methodist Church - The majority of the Couch family were members of Princeton Methodist Church. The church is very important to the Couch family. Samuel Couch was on the board of trustees in 1854, when the land was bought for the church. There have been Couch descendants attending this church ever since.

Cemetery:

Directions provided by Larry Parr. He said to get to the cemetery go out old 441 toward Watkinsville, GA. As you go down the hill after you cross under Highway 10 you will see a small unpaved street on the left called Martha Drive. It is a small street and easy to miss. If you come to the bridge you have gone too far. This is a narrow street but go to the end it is a circle. The cemetery will be on the left. You will find Matilda's father and mother, John and Martha Couch, Martha's mother, Elizabeth A. Skelton Hale (1813 - 1883) and many of her brother's and sisters.

Frances Turner from Thomson, GA. wrote to Larry Parr in 1976. She is the daughter of Sylvester Stephens. Larry started his research on the Couch Family in 1976. In Frances' letter, she stated that Matilda is buried in an unmarked grave at Princeton Methodist Church.

Also, you will find Matilda's brother, Henry Couch and one of her sisters, Margaret (Maggie) Couch Harrelson buried there. I think her brother John Couch is buried in the Princeton Methodist Church cemetery.

All of these Couch's belonged to the Princeton Methodist Church there. You will pass this church on the way out of Athens on the Macon Highway.

They (Joseph & Matilda) married in Clarke County 7 September 1879, Book G, page 242. She is listed as Matilda Church and that is why you may have had problems finding it?

A special thanks to Larry Parr of Atlanta, GA for contributing the Couch family photo and other information concerning the Couch and Stephens family of Athens, Clarke Co, GA.
